Características de los cables o conductores eléctricos: Partes, Calibres y Amperaje
Son los elementos que proveen la trayectoria para el flujo de la corriente en las instalaciones eléctricas. Con los conductores eléctricos se hace la distribución de la energía eléctrica para el control y consumo de los equipos de la instalación.
Generalmente cuentan con aislamiento en el orden de 500 µm hasta los 5 cm; dicho aislamiento es plástico, su tipo y grosor dependerá del nivel de tensión de trabajo, la corriente nominal, de la temperatura ambiente y de la temperatura de servicio del conductor.
Un cable eléctrico se compone de:
Conductor: Elemento que conduce la corriente eléctrica y puede ser de diversos materiales metálicos. Puede estar formado por uno o varios hilos.
Aislamiento: Recubrimiento que envuelve al conductor, para evitar la circulación de corriente eléctrica fuera del mismo.
Capa de relleno: Material aislante que envuelve a los conductores para mantener la sección circular del conjunto.
Cubierta: Está hecha de materiales que protejan mecánicamente al cable. Tiene como función proteger el aislamiento de los conductores de la acción de la temperatura, sol, lluvia, etc.
Clasificación de los conductores eléctricos (Cables) Los cables eléctricos se pueden subdividir según: Niveles de tensión cables de muy baja tensión (hasta 50 V) cables de baja tensión (hasta 1000 V) cables de media tensión (hasta 30 kV) cables de alta tensión (hasta 66 kV) cables de muy alta tensión (por encima de los 770 kV)
Características de los cables o conductores eléctricos: partes, calibre y amperaje.
Las partes de un conductor, son las siguientes:
a) Alma conductora: es la parte que lleva toda la corriente de consumo. Los materiales comúnmente utilizados son el cobre y el aluminio, pero con más frecuencia de aluminio.
b) Aislante: se encarga de separar o aislar el flujo de corriente del exterior, para evitar cortocircuitos y la electrocución. Este se fabrica de un material termoplástico o en hule.
c) Cubierta protectora: no todos la traen, esta se encarga de proteger el material aislante y el arma conductora contra daños físicos y químicos. Se construye generalmente de nylon, esto varía según el ambiente al que se vaya a utilizar.
Calibre
El calibre define el tamaño de la sección transversal del conductor. El calibre puede estar expresado en mm² o bajo la normalización americana en AWG (American Wire Gauge). Cuando se expresa en AWG, el más grueso es el 4/0, siguiendo en orden descendente 3/0, 2/0, 1/0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, 16 y 18 que es el más delgado usado en instalaciones eléctricas.
En este caso, mientras más grande es el número más pequeña es la sección transversal del conductor.
Para conductores con un área mayor del designado como 4/0, se hace una designación en función del su área en pulgadas, denominada CM (circular mil), siguiendo 250,000 CM o 250 KCM.
Ampacidad
Es su capacidad de conducción continua de corriente bajo condiciones específicas.
La ampacidad de un conductor lo define su calibre, así como la temperatura ambiente a la que se encuentre.
Existen tablas que especifican la ampacidad de los conductores según el material aislante, y la máxima temperatura ambiente a la que pueden estar expuestos. Mientras más grande es la sección del conductor más corriente este puede conducir sin que se sobrecaliente.
El amperio o ampere (símbolo A), es la unidad de intensidad de corriente eléctrica.
Forma parte de las unidades básicas en el Sistema Internacional de Unidades y fue nombrado en honor al matemático y físico francés André-Marie Ampère.
El amperio es la intensidad de una corriente constante que, manteniéndose en dos conductores paralelos, rectilíneos, de longitud infinita, de sección circular despreciable y situados a una distancia de un metro uno de otro en el vacío, produciría una fuerza igual a 2×10-7 newton por metro de longitud.
El amperio es una unidad básica, junto con el metro, el segundo, y el kilogramo.5 Su definición no depende de la cantidad de carga eléctrica, sino que a la inversa, el culombio es una unidad derivada definida como la cantidad de carga desplazada por una corriente de un amperio en un período de tiempo de un segundo.
Como resultado, la corriente eléctrica es una medida de la velocidad a la que fluye la carga eléctrica. Un amperio representa el promedio de un culombio de carga eléctrica por segundo
