What to Include on Your Board Meeting Agenda

The agenda for a board meeting is the document that defines what will be discussed, voted on and agreed upon at the next board meeting. To design an effective agenda for a meeting of the board, you must know your organization’s requirements and the preferences of all its members. It’s a document to be made collaboratively to ensure the highest level of information, engagement and effectiveness.

The board secretary should go through the minutes of the previous meeting prior to calling the meeting to begin. This will let everyone know what they think about in relation to the prior decisions and discussions and will allow them to get into new topics faster.

This portion of the agenda will contain important updates from the most important players in the room on a wide variety of subjects. Depending on your company structure it could include reports from the executive director and finance director as well as the program committee. Board members are also able to ask questions about these presentations or any other news relevant to them.

In the end, this is where your board can set aside time for any other new business or issues they’d like to address. This is also a great time to make special announcements, congratulations messages or shout-outs. Your facilitator at the meeting will announce the date of the next meeting.
